Please take a moment to be entirely honest with yourself.
If I were to download your mind onto my laptop right now, open it, and click on the file named "My Documents", what would I find?
I’m betting that somewhere, there'd be a folder named "Drafts," or "My Novel," or maybe just "Ideas."
And inside that folder, that's where the graveyard is. Half-finished stories, and for most people, half-started stories too! Articles that petered out after paragraph two. Brilliant concepts that have been left to rot because you didn't know how to make the idea real - to manifest it, if you will.
Most people have a folder like this - and some are people who could be brilliant writers, and live brilliant lives because of it. This folder is where their dreams go to wait for a "someday" that isn't on the calendar.
I know this, because for years I stuffed so much into that folder that I'm still sorting through it now.
The View From The Foggy Window
It was a rainy Friday evening last December. I was stuck on a packed bus going nowhere relevant to this story. The windows were steamed up with the thick condensation that you get on the windows of an old bus in the rain. So I couldn't distract myself with the view. I sat there, squeezed between a stranger and the edge of my seat, realising that another year was about to pass without me having done the one thing I promised myself I would do.
I wanted the travel. I wanted the nice meals out. I wanted to build a future where I was paid for my mind, not just my time. Most importantly, I wanted to be a pro. I knew I had a novel in me — I knew the characters, I knew the plot. But I didn't have the "status" or the time to write it.
I was waiting for permission. I was waiting for an agent to magically find me on that bus and hand me a contract.
I was delusional, of course.
The "Language Hacking" Epiphany
In an attempt to distract myself from the crushing weight of my own inaction, I opened a book about "language hacking." The author was arguing about the best way to learn Italian.
There were two paths:
Structured Learning: Sitting in a classroom for years, studying grammar, waiting until you are "perfect" before you speak.
Total Immersion: Moving to Italy, burning your bridges, and forcing yourself to buy groceries from often chatty Italians, or starve.
And that is when the inspiration came to me.
I had been treating writing like "Structured Learning." I was waiting to be perfect before I called myself a writer. But the people who actually make it? They choose Immersion.
But I couldn't just quit my job and move to a cabin in the woods. I needed a middle ground. I call it Strategic Immersion.
I realized that if I wanted to be a professional writer, I had to stop "practising" in secret. I had to start submitting. I had to up the stakes. I had to put my work in front of people who had the power to pay me.
